Steven Oberbauer – Biology Professor

An invaluable member of the FIU family, Professor Steve Oberbauer joined the Department of Biological Sciences in 1988. A graduate of the Duke University Ph.D. botany program, Oberbauer came to FIU from San Diego State University, where he was a member of the Systems Ecology Research Group.

His research regularly takes him to the Alaskan tundra, the Costa Rican rainforest and the Florida Everglades, and focuses in the response of plants and vegetation to stress and climate change.

A published author with more than 80 scientific articles and book chapters based on his findings, he also has received more than $6.7 million in external funding for his research since 1998 and more than $2 million in the last two years.

An exemplary educator and ambassador of FIU, he has twice received the University Research Award, last year and in 1997, and has won FIU Faculty Scholarship awards in 2008 and 2009.
