Monique Hamaty-Simmonds ’96 – Business Administration Alumna


As president and CEO of Tortuga Imports, Inc., one of the Top 5,000 fastest-growing private U.S. companies according to Inc. magazine, Jamaican-born Monique Hamaty-Simmonds handles the worldwide distribution, mail order and online sales of her family-owned, Cayman Island-based business.

Under her leadership, a result of her more than a decade of experience, the company has opened new markets and built its international business.

Today, Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cakes are the No. 1 export of the Cayman Islands and were recently named Best Cruise Souvenir for the seventh consecutive year.

In 2002, she and her husband and CFO, Marcus Simmonds, were named in Gourmet News’ biennial 20 Under 40 list, and she was a finalist in the entrepreneur category for a South Florida Business Journal 2007 Businesswoman of the Year Award.

FIU has recognized Hamaty-Simmonds, a Lifetime Member of the FIU Alumni Association, as one of Florida’s Top 50 Women Business Leaders.
