Patricio Lau, Medical Student

Having moved to the U.S. from Nicaragua several years ago, I discovered that the sciences was a field where the language barrier had far less importance. The sciences have always captivated me so it was a logical choice.

College wasn’t something I was planning to do but I completed degrees in both chemistry and biology at FIU and wanted to move forward. When it was time to choose a medical school, I wanted a big city with a large, diverse population.

I looked at schools that offered me not only a good education but also the best opportunity to interact with patients in year one and a chance to do something in the community.

Now I’m president of the inaugural class of FIU’s Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine. The impact a physician has on people’s lives is amazing.

I want to make that impact.
