Mary Helen Hayden, Social Work Professor

I have dedicated my career to working with populations-at-risk for social and economic well-being. I began my career working with hardcore drug abusers and later worked for the National Institute of Drug Abuse as a trainer in addictions.

I now have the privilege of helping to educate the next generation of social workers who can each make a difference in the world.

At FIU, I direct the undergraduate social work program and teach courses in working with families and groups as well as diversity and self-awareness.

I believe it is critically important for social work students to be engaged in their educational journey.

Our students are actively involved in the South Florida community through their field practica, inter-disciplinary team home visits, and student organizations doing community service.

My greatest reward now is mentoring and supporting students as they integrate their personal values with those of the social work profession.
