Kate MacMillin, Journalism Professor

I teach Writing Strategies and Online News FIU’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. In 2009, I co-executive produced the documentary Lessons from South Africa and the Web series The Stigma Stops with Me – two exciting examples of work by SJMC students participating in our HIV/AIDS initiative.

We embarked on this two-year initiative to raise awareness about HIV/AIDS not only in our community, but also around the world. We also wanted to highlight the importance of responsible, consistent reporting and we extremely are proud that our students’ work has aired on PBS and is available online.

I’ve been in TV production for more than 30 years and produced the first HDTV drama-short in North America. That experience has enriched my career as an instructor.

Making the transition to teaching is one of the best decisions I could have made at this point in my career.

I really love seeing my students learn and take ownership of their work.
