Darden Pyron, History Professor

I’ve been teaching at FIU since 1972 and it’s the only job I’ve ever had. I’m a historian, but there’s more to it than that. History is about who we are, where we came from, and where we want to go, not only as individuals, but as a people.

It’s a means of getting answers to these big questions. The study of all Humanities disciplines is a critical part of a well-rounded education.

Many things about my students, both current and former, inspire me. Having the echoes of my own passion for history come back to me when a student gets a great grade in my class; meeting a former student 10 years later who tells me I made a difference in his education ; when someone tells me she re-wrote a paper for my class 50 times to get an A; these things make me happy.

My class is hard but I will make you better. I’ll tell lots of funny stories and push you to succeed. I want you to come out on the top of the heap.
