Cristine O’Hara, College of Education Alumna

I know most people don’t like teaching middle school children. It’s an odd age where education may not be top of their list. But I disagree. This is where I can inspire them to love reading, to grasp literature and understand how they can better see the world through it.

I am an 8th grade language arts teacher and the 2011 Miami-Dade County Teacher of the Year.  I received both my bachelors and my master’s in education from FIU.

Since I was a child, my mother knew I would be a teacher: I was always organized and loved to read and learn.

In my classroom, I use computer graphics to help my students bring their studies to virtual life. Whether interpreting Greek myths through videos they produce or classic novels using T-shirts they design, my students come to understand the age-old truths of language and literature by expressing them in different ways.
